Selective mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child’s inability to speak in one or more social settings (e.g., at school or in public places, with adults or peers) despite being able to speak comfortably in other settings, such as at home with family. This condition is often first noticed by preschool or early primary classroom teachers, and it can have a significant impact on the student’s ability to fully participate in classroom and school activities both academically and socially.
