Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Alanís was a second-grade bilingual teacher in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Today she engages teacher candidates and practicing teachers for their work in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms with a focus on the rights of children to develop their language and cultural identity. She is a former President of the Texas Association for Bilingual Education and former Governing Board Member for the National Association for Early Childhood Education.
